The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency will seek comments on a proposal to remove the C&R Batter Company Inc. Superfund Site in Virginia from the Superfund National Priorities List.

According to an April 4 EPA news release, the Chesterfield County location is on the list of the country’s most contaminated sites. EPA Mid-Atlantic Regional Administrator Adam Ortiz noted the National Priorities List can prove to be a huge issue for communities facing environmental justice issues.

“Deletions from the NPL can revitalize communities, raise property values and promote economic growth by signaling to potential developers and financial institutions that cleanup is complete,” Ortiz said in the news release. “We’re happy to propose this site to be deleted from the National Priorities List because it means that EPA has followed through with its promise to clean up this site and protect human health and the environment.”

According to the news release, the site is slated for removal from the list as a result of evidence pulled from data collected and the fact that the clean-up of the site has been finished. Moreover, the EPA noted it determined the acidity in groundwater at the location is on par with local levels and monitoring is no longer needed.

According to the news release, it published a notice March 31 outlining its plan to delete all or portions of 10 locations from the NPL. Comments will be accepted through May 2, with final and proposed deletions to be released in the fall. For more information or to comment, visit regulations.gov.
