Leader Rodgers Statement on Rep. Fred Upton’s Retirement Announcement

House Energy and Commerce Committee Republican Leader Cathy McMorris Rodgers (R-WA) released the following statement after former Committee Chairman and current Energy Subcommittee Republican Leader Fred Upton (R-MI) announced that he will retire at the end of this Congress.

“Fred Upton has been more than a great leader on the Energy and Commerce Committee, he’s also been a dear friend for many years. Fred has represented the people of southwest Michigan proudly since he came into office in 1987, and he’s always worked tirelessly to be their strongest voice possible in Congress. His time as Chairman of the Energy and Commerce Committee and continued service since has left a lasting impact on the American people for the better. As Chairman, he always led us to focus on solving problems. Bipartisan bills were always the priority because Fred knew that is what would drive the best results. One of his greatest accomplishments was leading the charge on the 21st Century Cures Act. Millions of people today have hope for more cures thanks to Fred’s vision and ability to bring people together.

“His announcement is sad to many, for both Democrats and Republicans alike. He will certainly be missed on the Energy and Commerce Committee. I look forward to the months ahead as we continue the People’s work until his retirement. I wish Fred, Amey, and their family all the best.”
