Secretary of Energy Jennifer Granholm released a statement April 4 in response to an AR6 Working Group III report from the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change.
According to Granholm, the report highlighted the critical necessity of reducing carbon emissions.
“Today’s clarion call of an IPCC report reminds us of what we already know: climate change is wreaking havoc on communities and the planet, and we must sharply decrease our carbon pollution now," Granholm stated.
In her statement, Granholm also questioned how many additional climate science reports were required to address the magnitude of the environmental crisis.
"We know what we need to do: deploy, deploy, deploy clean technologies in the power sector, transportation, buildings, industry and more," Granholm said. "It’s the biggest opportunity in a generation to grow our economies, improve health and invest in communities, and we can either reap the benefits today or pay the costs tomorrow."
She also stressed the need for the U.S. to act quickly to mitigate the effects of climate change, despite the fact that the U.S. Department of Energy has already expanded its climate action during the Biden-Harris administration.
"That’s why we are hard at work implementing $62 billion from the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law to lay a strong foundation for a clean energy economy," Granholm stated.
Additionally, Granholm stated implementing the remainder of Biden's Build a Better America framework will help put the U.S. on track to achieving 100 percent renewable energy by 2035 and net zero emissions by 2050, while simultaneously creating millions of jobs, according to her statement.
