The Office of Fossil Energy and Carbon Management (FECM) of the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) has announced the launch of its Strategic Vision, "The Role of Fossil Energy and Carbon Management in Achieving Net-Zero Greenhouse Gas Emissions."
FECM's Strategic Vision seeks to help the DOE in implementing more effective carbon management strategies and advocate for approaches that mitigate the environmental impact of fossil fuels and carbon-based feedstocks, a recent release on energy.gov said. Additionally, it aspires to aid the U.S. in achieving net-zero carbon emissions.
"Decarbonization is the cornerstone of President Biden's strategy, which means that we must find ways to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and remove legacy carbon dioxide emissions from the accumulated pool in the atmosphere," Dr. Jennifer Wilcox, FECM acting assistant secretary and principal deputy assistant secretary, said in the release.
Wilcox also noted that although FECM is critical to the country's shift to decarbonization, it cannot accomplish that goal alone.
"Our Strategic Vision reflects those goals and the work required to achieve it," she said. "We are committed to enabling the demonstration, and ultimately the deployment, of carbon management technologies and solutions that will mitigate the challenges associated with the use of fossil fuels in a just and sustainable way."
FECM has recommended three strategic initiatives to aid the U.S. government in reaching a completely decarbonized power sector by 2035 and net-zero emissions by the year 2050.
These initiatives include advancements in justice, labor and involvement; advancements in carbon management techniques toward deep decarbonization; and advancements in technology leading to sustainable energy resources.
