House Energy and Commerce Committee Republican Leader Cathy McMorris Rodgers (R-WA) issued the following statement regarding the announcement of Energy and Commerce conferees who will be responsible for finding a compromise between the House’s United States Innovation and Competition (USICA) and the Senate’s U.S. Innovation and Competition (COMPETES) Acts of 2021.
“To beat China and secure U.S. economic leadership, we need to have an honest discussion about lifting tax burdens and removing costly regulatory and permitting barriers that are hampering American industries and their ability to innovate—especially those that pose significant challenges to American energy competitiveness and security. So far, USICA and the America COMPETES Act have instead prioritized more massive expansions of government subsidies and multi-billion-dollar command and control programs. While there is still uncertainty around the outcome of this legislation, one thing is certain – we will not beat the Chinese Communist Party by trying to outspend them. I look forward to joining my fellow conferees to address how the final bill can improve supply chain security and address the real barriers to our competitiveness.”
