KENNEDY WORKS TO PROTECT EMPLOYMENT RIGHTS FOR TROOPS

The following press release was published by the Committee on Health, Education, Labor and Pensions on Oct. 19, 2005. It is reproduced in full below.

Washington, D.C.- Tomorrow, Senator Edward M. Kennedy will speak before the Senate Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions Committee on protecting the employment rights of our National Guard Members returning from Iraq. Senator Kennedy, after having met several times with Massachusetts members of the National Guard and Reserves, requested a GAO report to investigate the effectiveness of federal agencies who have the responsibility for protecting Guard and Reservists reemployment rights. The report will be released tomorrow. Senator Kennedy believes that our men and women returning home from war should not have to worry about their civilian jobs still being there when they get back. The war in Iraq places hardship on families on Massachusetts and across the country. Reemployment discrimination should not be one of the challenges facing our Guard and Reservists returning home from war.WHO: SENATOR EDWARD M. KENNEDY
