Murray: President’s Student Aid Bill of Rights is an “Important Step Forward”

The following press release was published by the Committee on Health, Education, Labor and Pensions on March 10, 2015. It is reproduced in full below.

(Washington, D.C.) - Today, Senate Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions (HELP) Committee Ranking Member Patty Murray (D-WA) released the following statement on President Obama’s proposed Student Aid Bill of Rights.

“I am very glad that the President proposed a Student Aid Bill of Rights to help borrowers enroll in affordable repayment plans and strengthen consumer protections for the nearly 40 million people across the country with student debt. As someone who relied on student loans myself to go to college, I understand how important it is to make sure that students and families have the tools they need to manage the too-often crushing burden of student loan debt. The President’s proposal is an important step forward, and I urge Republicans to work with us on this and other ways to make college more affordable, ease the burden of student debt and repayment, and ensure more Americans have the opportunity to invest in their futures through higher education."
