Murray: Department of Labor Needs to Defend and Implement Updated Overtime Rule: It’s “The Right Direction For Families and Our Economy”

The following press release was published by the Committee on Health, Education, Labor and Pensions on Oct. 30, 2017. It is reproduced in full below.

(Washington, D.C.) -Senator Patty Murray (D-WA), ranking member of the Senate Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions (HELP) Committee released the following statement on the Department of Labor’s decision to appeal a flawed decision by a Texas judge that ruled against the Obama Administration overtime rule. The updated overtime rule would help provide economic security for millions of working families by making 4.2 million low-wage workers eligible for overtime pay when they work more than 40 hours a week and by strengthening overtime protections for another 8.9 million workers.

“The Department of Labor should not only defend its ability to update our country’s outdated overtime rules, but commit to implementing the changes made under the Obama Administration to expand access to overtime for millions of workers. That’s the right direction for families and our economy-and anything less would be an insult to workers who simply aren’t getting paid fairly for their hours on the job."
