VA reports record number of homeless veterans housed in fiscal year 2025

The Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) reported that it permanently housed 51,936 homeless veterans nationwide during fiscal year 2025. This figure marks an increase of 4,011 veterans compared to the previous year and is the highest since the VA began tracking individual veterans housed instead of total housing placements.

The shift to this more precise methodology started in 2022 under the Biden Administration. When retroactively applied to earlier years, the data show a steady increase in unique veterans housed each year since fiscal year 2021.

VA Secretary Doug Collins commented on these efforts: “This is life-changing and in many cases life-saving work. We are proud of the progress VA is making to get Veterans off the streets and are redoubling our efforts to continue this momentum moving forward.”

In May 2025, the VA launched its "Getting Veterans Off the Street" initiative. Through this program, every VA health care system hosted outreach events aimed at finding unsheltered veterans and connecting them with immediate housing programs, health care, behavioral health services, and benefits. The initiative helped move 25,065 unsheltered veterans into either interim or permanent housing.

Additionally, President Trump issued an executive order in May to create a National Center for Warrior Independence for Homeless Veterans at the West Los Angeles VA Medical Center campus. The center aims to provide housing and support for up to 6,000 homeless veterans by 2028.

VA staff and community partners continue daily efforts to help veterans secure permanent housing or reunite with family and friends when possible. More information about these initiatives can be found at https://www.va.gov/homeless/.
