Murray: Republican Support for Protecting Pre-Existing Conditions is News to Patients Still Fighting Back Against Trumpcare

The following press release was published by the Committee on Health, Education, Labor and Pensions on June 12, 2018. It is reproduced in full below.

WASHINGTON, D.C. - Today, U.S. Senator Patty Murray (D-WA) issued the following statement on Majority Leader McConnell’s claim that “everybody" in the Senate supports current law protections that ensure patients with pre-existing conditions can’t be denied coverage, even though Republicans repeatedly attempted to gut those protections and support Trump Administration efforts to undermine them.

“If every Republican now supports protecting pre-existing conditions, that’s news to very sick patients across the country who fought back again and again as Republicans tried to go back to the days when a pre-existing condition meant you might not be eligible for insurance, or could be priced out completely-especially since many Republicans continue to want to pass harmful bills to do exactly that.

“As I’ve said all along, I am at the table and ready to work with Republicans to lower costs and strengthen health care as soon as they’re ready to put patients ahead of extreme, partisan special interests-and I would welcome their support in standing against President Trump’s latest effort to ignore the law and allow insurers to deny sick patients access to health care they desperately need."
