Murray: Trump’s Latest Act of Sabotage Will Drive Up Costs, Undermine Access to Care for People With Pre-Existing Conditions

The following press release was published by the Committee on Health, Education, Labor and Pensions on June 19, 2018. It is reproduced in full below.

WASHINGTON, D.C. - Today, U.S. Senator Patty Murray (D-WA), ranking member of the Senate Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions (HELP) Committee, issued the following statement on the expected finalization of a new Trump Administration rule to further sabotage patients’ health care. The vast majority of health care stakeholders agree this new regulation will further undermine access to care for people with pre-existing conditions, destabilize markets, and raise premiums in the individual marketplaces.

“In pursuing these damaging policies, President Trump is ignoring people from across the country and across the political spectrum-patients, doctors, insurance commissioners, and medical experts-who all agree this latest act of sabotage will make health care in our country worse by undermining access to care for people with pre-existing conditions, destabilizing markets, and driving up costs.

“Let’s be clear-this policy has nothing to do with patients and everything to do with appealing to extreme Republican donors and special interests-and it has got to stop. Every Republican in Congress who truly cares about families’ health should join Democrats in opposing these rules, start working with us immediately to roll back President Trump’s reckless health care sabotage, and stop him from driving up patient costs any further."
