The Biden-Harris administration and the U.S. Department of Transportation announced nearly $1.5 billion to be made available in grants and funded by the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law to modernize bus fleets and facilities.
The goal of the grant is to expand public transportation around the country while also reducing emissions that often come with buses, according to a March 7 news release. With reduced emissions, the DOT hopes many cities will experience cleaner, better air that will promote a healthier population.
"This is another example of President Biden's Bipartisan Infrastructure Law in action. We're making the largest ever investment in this program for buses and bus facilities, helping to deliver better commutes and cleaner air to American communities," said U.S. Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg.
The funds are made available to organizations and municipalities through the Low or No Emission and Grants for Buses and Bus Facilities competitive programs. Submissions that aim to create low to no emission buses and bus programs will contend for the grants.
Additionally, the grants are expected to create jobs across the country and help to advance the goal of the administration to combat climate change.
