Under Secretary of Science and Innovation on college internships: 'We need all hands on deck to address the climate crisis'

The U.S. Department of Energy is DOE Office of Science will sponsor students and staff for science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) internships and research opportunities this summer, a news release said.

The department will spend $12.5 million to sponsor 922 undergraduate students and 64 faculty members for three STEM-focused workforce development programs. They will take place this summer at 17 DOE national laboratories. The awardees will include community colleges and historically Black colleges and universities, other Minority Serving Institutions, and institutions in jurisdictions that are part of the Establishing Program to Stimulate Competitive Research, the news release said.

An additional 64 college and university faculty members and 25 students were awarded research opportunities at institutions that have been historically underrepresented in the research community. The faculty members and students will be working with national lab research staff on various projects.   

“We need all hands on deck to address the climate crisis, and that means investing in a science workforce that reflects the diversity of the nation,” Under Secretary of Science and Innovation Geraldine Richmond said in a statement.   

The awards highlight "DOE’s commitment to supporting a highly skilled, diverse workforce that is equipped to tackle the science, energy, environmental, and national security challenges of today and tomorrow," the news release said.
