Wyden Statement on Trump Demands for Payroll Tax Cut

The following press release was published by the United States Senate Committee on Finance Chairman's News on July 16, 2020. It is reproduced in full below.

Senate Finance Committee Ranking Member Ron Wyden, D-Ore., today released the following statement in reaction to reporting that Donald Trump is demanding a payroll tax cut in the next coronavirus relief package:

“Five months into a once-in-a-century economic crisis, Donald Trump still has only one idea: tax cuts. A payroll tax cut would do nothing to help the 20 million workers who have lost their jobs, and little for those working significantly reduced hours. Another payroll tax cut for employers would also shower the country’s wealthiest corporations with billions of dollars. The right thing to do for families and the economy is extend supercharged unemployment benefits. They have unquestionably kept the economy afloat."
