Wyden Statement on Taxpayer Advocate Report

The following press release was published by the United States Senate Committee on Finance Chairman's News on Jan. 12. It is reproduced in full below.

Washington, D.C- Senate Finance Committee Chair Ron Wyden, D-Ore., today released the following statement in response to the National Taxpayer Advocate Report:

“I’ve been sounding the alarm for years on the urgent need to rebuild the IRS, which has been hampered by a decade of Republican attacks.

“The IRS needs significantly more resources to tackle the dual challenges of ensuring wealthy tax cheats pay what they owe, and improving customer service to millions of hardworking taxpayers who play by the rules. It’s unacceptable that wealthy tax cheats face essentially zero chance of an audit, while working people wait months for refunds.

“The IRS is only just beginning to recover from a decade of Republican budget cuts, and funding included in the Build Back Better Act is essential to getting this agency back on its feet. Without these investments our ability to collect taxes owed and serve the American people will continue to suffer."
