WASHINGTON, D.C. - The United States House of Representatives voted today in favor of H.R. 1677, the Taxpayer Protection Act of 2007, sponsored by Ways and Means Committee Chairman Charles B. Rangel (D-NY) and Oversight Subcommittee Chairman John Lewis (D-GA). The bill drew overwhelming bipartisan support for its common sense provisions designed to improve communication between the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) and taxpayers to protect them from fraudulent or predatory behavior.
“On tax day we are reminded that we must do more to protect taxpayers from fraudulent tax schemes, misleading websites and predatory refund loans," said Oversight Subcommittee Chairman Lewis. “The Taxpayer Protection Act is an important first step in standing up for the American taxpayer, moving us in the right direction toward simplifying tax issues for the average taxpayer." The Taxpayer Protection Act of 2007 is the result of hearings conducted by the Ways and Means Oversight Subcommittee. A summary of the legislation and its estimated revenue effect is attached.
