WASHINGTON, D.C. - Ways and Means Committee Chairman Charles B. Rangel (D-NY) issued the following statement in response to President Barack Obama’s remarks today on job creation and economic growth:
“There is no question that we can, and will, do more to create jobs here in America. The last employment report clearly indicates we have made progress in stemming the huge job cuts that were occurring earlier this year, but we still need to turn the corner and start increasing employment.
“Congress is focused on this key issue and is working with President Obama and his economic advisers to take the necessary and responsible steps to speed up job creation and economic growth. There is no silver bullet, but we can take critical steps to spur economic growth and encourage the hiring of workers. Today President Obama gave us a roadmap, with clear focus on small businesses, improvements in our aging infrastructure, and investments in families to help provide resources for education and energy efficiency.
“Too many of our brothers and sisters, friends and neighbors, have felt the pain associated with losing a job and the fear of uncertainty for their future. That is why we must also act swiftly to ensure that unemployment and health benefits remain in place for those who have lost their jobs through no fault of their own. These lifelines are an investment in the American workforce and our local communities. Unemployment and health benefits not only ensure that the millions of unemployed may continue taking care of their families while they seek out their next job opportunity, but also keep local businesses alive as unemployed workers and their families can afford to buy basic goods and services.
“I applaud President Obama’s focus on these key issues and look forward to working with him and leaders in Congress to finalize initiatives to create jobs and continue our economic recovery so that together we may emerge from this recession stronger than ever."
