WASHINGTON, D.C. - Ways and Means Committee Chairman Sander M. Levin (D-MI) issued the following statement on the appointment of Ways and Means Committee Member Xavier Becerra (D-CA), House Budget Committee Member John Spratt (D-CA), and Representative Jan Schakowsky (D-IL) to President Obama’s National Commission on Fiscal Responsibility and Reform:

“I commend Speaker Pelosi on her fine appointments to the President’s Commission. Chairman Spratt and Representatives Becerra and Schakowsky will be excellent emissaries to this panel.

“Throughout his service in Congress and on the Ways and Means Committee, Xavier Becerra has been a tireless advocate for working families and with a concrete understanding of the importance of Social Security, Medicare and TANF. Xavier’s experience on this Committee will serve him well as he works to address the challenge of our national debt while ensuring our children and grand children inherit a nation full of great opportunity and promise.
