Levin, Stark Praise Fraud Enforcement Efforts in Medicare

The following press release was published by the U.S. Congress Committee on Ways and Means on May 13, 2010. It is reproduced in full below.

WASHINGTON D.C. - Ways and Means Committee Chairman Sander M. Levin (D-MI) and Ways and Means Health Subcommittee Chairman Pete Stark (D-CA), today released the following statements in response to the news that the Obama Administration collected $2.5 billion in fraud enforcement efforts in Medicare for 2009.

“Combating fraud in the health care system has always been at the core of our health reform efforts," said Ways and Means Committee Chairman Sander M. Levin (D-MI). “Today’s news proves that the tools put in place by Congress and the Administration to aggressively weed out bad actors will not only save billions, but protect Medicare beneficiaries from the abusive practices that jeopardize the benefits that they deserve."

"Today's news shows that we finally have an administration that cares about running Medicare well," said Ways and Means Health Subcommittee Chairman Pete Stark (D-CA). "In coming years, the Obama Administration will have more tools at their disposal. Health reform provides greater authority and more funding to HHS to police Medicare for fraud and abuse. These efforts will save billions and ensure that Medicare runs better for patients, providers, and taxpayers."
