Levin, Stark on Recess Nomination of Dr. Donald Berwick as CMS Administrator

The following press release was published by the U.S. Congress Committee on Ways and Means on July 7, 2010. It is reproduced in full below.

WASHINGTON, DC -Ways and Means Committee Chairman Sander M. Levin (D-MI) and Health Subcommittee Chairman Pete Stark (D-CA) released the following statements today in response to the announcement that President Obama will make a recess appointment of Dr. Don Berwick as Administrator for the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS):

“Dr. Berwick is the ideal person to lead the Medicare and Medicaid programs," said Ways and Means Committee Chairman Sander M. Levin (D-MI). “He is respected throughout the nation as an expert in improving the quality and efficiency of our health care system. His expertise is especially needed to ensure that health reform is implemented in a timely and effective way. A recess appointment of Dr. Berwick is necessary as Senate Republicans continue putting partisan politics ahead of the country's needs."

"Dr. Berwick is one of the nation's leading experts on how to improve the quality of health care, and a recess appointment in this case is warranted," said Ways and Means Health Subcommittee Chairman Pete Stark (D-CA).
