Levin and McDermott Urge Swift Action on the Korea FTA

The following press release was published by the U.S. Congress Committee on Ways and Means on March 7, 2011. It is reproduced in full below.

WASHINGTON DC - Ways and Means Ranking Member Sander Levin (D-MI) and Ways and Means Trade Subcommittee Ranking Member Jim McDermott (D-WA) today urged swift action on the Korea Free Trade Agreement following notification by the Office of the United States Trade Representative that it has completed its preparatory work on the agreement and is ready to being technical discussions on the draft implementing bill.

“The Korea Free Trade Agreement is ready and should be acted upon," said Ranking Member Levin. “The timeframe, once the agreement is submitted, is set forth by law. There is no reason for delay. Indeed, the importance of the agreement calls for prompt action. The Korea FTA represents a vital piece of a new trade policy, replacing one-way trade for two-way trade with a large economy involving important American-made products."

“We need to move forward quickly with technical discussions so that the Administration can submit the FTA for Congressional consideration as soon as possible," said Ranking Member McDermott. “I urge my colleagues not to play politics with this job-creating trade pact."
