The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs announced on Apr. 15 that it has significantly reduced the time required to process disability claims, pension, and survivor benefits for veterans. The department reports these improvements are a result of ongoing efforts during the Trump Administration to enhance services for veterans.

Faster processing means that more veterans are receiving their earned benefits in a timely manner. According to the VA, after handling a record number of over 3 million claims in fiscal year 2025, the department is on track for similar numbers in fiscal year 2026, having processed more than 1.5 million claims by mid-year.

The VA highlighted several milestones: In fiscal year 2026, one million disability claims were completed faster than ever before, reaching this figure by Feb. 2. Claims-processing accuracy has reached its highest point in two years at 94.02%. The average time to complete a claim dropped from 141.5 days to just over 80 days since the start of the current administration—a decrease of about forty-three percent.

Other areas also saw notable progress. The backlog of pending benefit claims fell below one hundred thousand for the first time since 2020 as of February this year. Initial pension claim processing times have been cut by sixty-six percent for veterans and over fifty-five percent for survivors compared to previous years. Similarly, Dependency and Indemnity Compensation (DIC) claim completion times have been reduced by more than half.

The VA attributes these results to focused leadership and targeted overtime work among staff—about half of whom are themselves veterans—which they say helps ensure both precision and compassion when delivering services.

"Under the leadership of President Trump, VA is focused on delivering Veterans, families, caregivers and survivors all of the benefits they’ve earned as quickly as possible," said VA Secretary Doug Collins. "These tremendous improvements underscore that commitment."
