WASHINGTON -- Today the Ways and Means Subcommittee on Oversight is holding a hearing to attack tax benefits for working, middle-class families. At the hearing, refundable tax credits are caught in the crosshairs of the Republican agenda. These tax credits provide unique incentives to reward work and help families pay for college, adopt and care for children, and purchase homes.
In 2009, these tax credits delivered almost $160 billion to more than 100 million American families, including:
• 101 million families claiming the Making Work Pay Credit
• 26 million families claiming the Earned Income Tax Credit
• 20 million families claiming child tax credits
• 9 million families claiming education tax credits
• 2 million families claiming housing tax credits
