Levin -- Statement on January Jobs Report

The following press release was published by the U.S. Congress Committee on Ways and Means on Feb. 3, 2012. It is reproduced in full below.

WASHINGTON - Ways and Means Committee Ranking Member Sander Levin (D-MI) today made the following statement regarding the January jobs report, which showed the economy gained 243,000 jobs last month, including 50,000 in the manufacturing sector alone:

“Today’s strong report provides yet more positive news about our improving economy and the significant role that manufacturing is playing in our recovery. Our economy is on the way back, but many Americans are still struggling to recover from an historic recession. In less than four weeks, the payroll tax cut expires for 160 million Americans and unemployment insurance expires for five million jobless Americans. Failure to extend the payroll tax cut and unemployment insurance through the remainder of the year would do significant harm to families throughout the country and our economy as a whole - just as it gains vital momentum."
