U.S. Senator Jeanne Shaheen, Ranking Member of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, welcomed the announcement of a temporary ceasefire between the United States and Iran on April 7. In her statement, Shaheen said de-escalation is overdue after more than a month of conflict.

Shaheen emphasized that reducing tensions is important for both American interests and regional stability. She said, “I welcome the announcement of a temporary ceasefire. De-escalation is a long-overdue step after over a month of war without a clear purpose and with mounting costs for the American people.”

The senator urged that diplomatic efforts should extend to other areas in conflict. “I urge all parties to extend this diplomatic momentum to the conflict in Lebanon and quickly deescalate the fighting there as well,” she said.

Shaheen also questioned what had been achieved by recent military actions, referencing casualties and economic impacts. She stated, “Even as I urge a lasting end to the conflict with Iran, we must also have a real accounting of what President Trump's war achieved. After weeks of combat, 13 American service members killed and enormous disruption to the global economy, President Trump has seemingly managed to replace Iran’s Supreme Leader with his hardliner son and equally dangerous IRGC officials.” She added concerns about possible incentives for Iran’s nuclear ambitions: “At the same time, I remain deeply concerned that U.S. actions may have incentivized Iran’s pursuit of a nuclear weapon.”

Shaheen noted domestic effects such as rising gas prices since hostilities began and disruptions in international trade routes: “The American people are also paying the price of President Trump’s war, with the cost of gas rising dramatically since the beginning of the conflict; Iran poised to further weaponize the Strait of Hormuz; and ongoing shock to the global economy.”

The Senate Foreign Relations Committee plays an important role in shaping U.S. foreign policy through examining treaties and legislation according to its official website. The committee designates its Chairman from majority members while its Ranking Member leads minority members as detailed on its official website. Historically, it has influenced key policies such as supporting measures like the Truman Doctrine in 1947 or rejecting treaties like Versailles in 1919 according to historical records.

Shaheen concluded her statement by stressing diplomatic solutions: “Diplomacy is the only way forward. There must now be an intensive diplomatic effort, alongside our allies, to conclude this conflict and ensure Iran does not develop a nuclear weapon.”
