WASHINGTON - Ways and Means Committee Ranking Member Sander Levin (D-MI) and Trade Subcommittee Ranking Member Jim McDermott (D-WA) today issued the following statements welcoming Canada to the Trans-Pacific Partnership negotiations:
LEVIN: “Given the close integration between our economies, Canada’s inclusion in TPP is the right decision and should be mutually beneficial. It will also give us the opportunity to correct the mistakes of NAFTA, especially on labor and the environmental standards. Japan continues to be in a wholly separate category from both Canada and Mexico. With our long history of fruitless attempts to open Japanese markets through negotiations, what we need from Japan is action not commitments to act, comprehensive action before - not after - joining TPP."
MCDERMOTT: "Canada’s participation in TPP is welcome news. Canada is our single largest trading partner. It gives us a good opportunity to fix some of the broken parts of NAFTA, to create more American jobs, and build an even better relationship with an important neighbor."
