Boustany Requests GAO Assess IRS Tax-Exempt Audits

The following press release was published by the U.S. Congress Committee on Ways and Means on Aug. 29, 2013. It is reproduced in full below.

Washington, DC - In a letter sent to the Government Accountability Office (GAO), Ways and Means Oversight Subcommittee Chairman Charles Boustany Jr., M.D. (R-LA) asked that GAO assess how the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) examines tax-exempt organizations. Following revelations that the IRS was subjecting conservative groups applying for tax-exempt status to extra scrutiny based on their personal beliefs, Boustany requested that GAO shed light on the examination process including what standards and controls are in place to prevent future abuse of taxpayers.

The letter can be read here.
