WASHINGTON, DC - Ways and Means Committee Ranking Member Sander Levin (D-MI) and Social Security Subcommittee Ranking Member Xavier Becerra (D-CA) today issued the following statement ahead of the 80th anniversary of Social Security tomorrow:
“Part of what makes America strong is our ability to create opportunities for people from all backgrounds, whether it’s the blue-collar assembly line worker building the next fuel-efficient car or the family physician caring for her patients. And while their professions are quite different, one thing that unites them - along with all the hardworking men and women throughout our country - is that they pay into Social Security with the promise that the benefits they’ve earned will be there for them and their families when they need them.
“For 80 years, Americans have contributed to this critical program with every paycheck and built it into an economic foundation that provides benefits for workers and their families. Social Security provides a modest income for our seniors as they grow older, helps support workers who become medically unable to work because of an illness or disability, and provides survivor benefits after a parent or spouse passes away. As we celebrate 80 years of this important program, let’s renew our commitment and work together to strengthen Social Security for all Americans into the future."
