WASHINGTON, D.C. - As the Board of Trustees for Social Security and Medicare continues to refuse to deliver their annual reports on the financial status of these programs, Ways and Means Social Security Subcommittee Chairman Sam Johnson (R-TX) and Health Subcommittee Chairman Pat Tiberi (R-OH) sent a second letter to Treasury Secretary Jacob Lew in his capacity as Managing Trustee.
To date, Secretary Lew has not responded to the Chairmen’s first request on May 3, 2016, for information on the overdue reports. In the letter sent today, the Chairmen again asked when the reports would finally be released to Congress and the American people, noting:
“We remain deeply disappointed by this Administration’s continued and blatant disregard for current law.
“Congress does not establish statutory deadlines lightly and intended that these reports would provide consistent, annual updates on the programs’ statuses. Throughout this Administration the Trustees Reports have never been submitted on time and have ranged from 41 days late in 2009 to 118 days late in 2014. Missing a statutory deadline without explanation is simply unacceptable. There is no reason why the committees of jurisdiction are not notified when the Administration chooses to miss the statutory deadline."
The Chairmen wrote that they expect a response by this Friday, June 10, 2016.
