WASHINGTON, DC - Ways and Means Committee Chairman Richard E. Neal (D-MA) released the following statement on the passing of former Congressman Fortney “Pete" Stark, who served as Chairman of the Ways and Means Health Subcommittee:

“Over his 40 years in Congress, Pete consistently stood on the right side of history. He fought for the vulnerable and marginalized, and sought to make America a place of real opportunity for all. His bold work as chair of the Ways and Means Health Subcommittee continues to benefit millions of Americans who have access to care because of the policies he crafted and championed. From COBRA to the Affordable Care Act to the eponymous Stark law, he led Congress’s efforts to protect patients and cut fraud and abuse out of our nation’s health care system.

“Beyond his groundbreaking work as a legislator, Pete will be remembered as a good man of great humor and endless heart. He was a treasured colleague and friend of mine for decades, and I extend my deepest sympathies to his family and loved ones during this difficult time."
