WASHINGTON, DC - Today, Ways and Means Committee Chairman Richard E. Neal (D-MA) released the following statement on Brexit:

“The United Kingdom formally leaves the European Union today and starts a new chapter in its history. Many important questions remain open that the United States will need to work with the United Kingdom and the European Union to answer over the next months.

“As the Administration considers beginning trade negotiations with the UK in earnest, I urge both sides to work on forging an agreement with terms that reflect our shared economic aspirations and democratic values. I expect to work closely with Ambassador Lighthizer to ensure that a potential agreement has strong, bipartisan support in Congress by: incorporating strong provisions on worker rights, environmental protection, and enforcement; preserving Congress’s freedom to regulate in dynamic areas of domestic policy; and respecting the achievement of the Good Friday Agreement, which has maintained peace and prosperity for communities in the United Kingdom, Europe, and the United States since 1998."
