WASHINGTON, DC-Today, House Ways and Means Committee Chairman Richard E. Neal (D-MA) released the following statement after meeting with Britain’s Secretary of State for Foreign, Commonwealth, and Development Affairs, Dominic Raab:
“During our meeting today, I reaffirmed to Secretary Raab the importance of the Good Friday Agreement not only for preserving peace on the island of Ireland, but also for maintaining economic strength and security in the region. Backing away from the Northern Ireland Protocol without sufficient measures in place to avoid the reimposition of a hard border would have disastrous consequences for our British and European allies and would seriously harm the U.S.-U.K. special relationship, which has prevailed as a pillar of stability for generations. I thank Secretary Raab for hearing my concerns and look forward to continuing to work together as our two countries uphold peace while strengthening our bilateral trade relationship."
