SPRINGFIELD, MA - Today, Ways and Means Committee Chairman Richard E. Neal (D-MA) released the following statement regarding recent New York Times reporting on President Trump’s tax information:
“According to the New York Times, the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) has spent at least a decade mired in an audit dispute with Donald Trump regarding a $72.9 million refund he requested. We need to learn why this particular audit process has persisted for so long. Moreover, now that Mr. Trump is President of the United States and oversees the agency he has fought against for years, we must ensure he is not attempting to interfere in the presidential audit program.
“The exact reason the Ways and Means Committee is pursuing our case to receive the President’s tax returns is to review the operations of the presidential audit program. The question around the $72.9 million refund raised in the New York Times piece bolsters our case - it is a specific complaint the President has with the IRS’s examination of his tax returns. I remain fully confident that we will prevail, and that we will then be able to conduct our urgently-needed, thorough review of the presidential audit program."
