SPRINGFIELD, MA - Ways and Means Committee Chairman Richard E. Neal (D-MA) released the following statement after the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) announced it would extend the deadline to register for an economic impact payment (EIP) to Nov. 21, 2020:
“For months, the IRS delayed its outreach to non-filers who are eligible to register for economic impact payments, resulting in a very narrow window for those Americans to meet the registration deadline. Last month, I called on the agency both to expedite its notification process and to extend the deadline so that these vulnerable individuals would have time to register for and receive assistance. The IRS’s decision to provide millions of non-filers with five extra weeks to complete this process is a welcome relief. The COVID recession is not over, and EIPs can help struggling families afford essentials during these extremely trying times.
“To further assist Americans in need, Senate Republicans should pass the updated Heroes Act, which includes a second round of economic impact payments. House Democrats passed this bill last week, because we know that workers, families, and the broader economy need additional support as the COVID crisis continues to ravage our nation."
