SPRINGFIELD, MA - Today, Ways and Means Committee Chairman Richard E. Neal (D-MA) released the following statement after Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) blocked approval of the CASH Act and instead introduced different legislation that combines the $2,000 checks with unrelated provisions regarding internet policy and elections:
“Senator McConnell easily could have held a vote on the CASH Act today. Instead, he blocked Senate Democrats’ attempt to pass the measure and is combining the $2,000 payments with policies that have nothing to do with providing relief to families. This unwieldy Frankenstein bill serves no purpose but to make it even less likely that the House-approved aid reaches Americans in need.
“These past several months, the country has grown accustomed to Senator McConnell’s callous obstruction of COVID assistance, but this particular display is especially painful given the President’s vocal readiness to approve larger checks. I sincerely hope the Senator rethinks this course of action and allows a standalone vote on the additional support families desperately need."
