WASHINGTON, DC-House Ways and Means Committee Chairman Richard E. Neal (D-MA) urged the Biden Administration to immediately delay the effective dates of harmful “midnight regulations" that the Trump Administration hastily finished as part of their last-ditch effort to impart their will on the American people. In a letter to U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) Acting Secretary Norris Cochran, Neal outlined how these rushed regulations would promote undue discrimination against LGBTQ+ people and reminded him of the Ways and Means Committee’s consistent opposition to the actions.
“The outgoing Administration published several final HHS regulations in the Federal Register in recent weeks with effective dates that have not yet taken effect," Neal explained. “These final regulations, among other provisions, would promote discrimination against LGBTQ+ people and other minorities, upend the agency’s regulatory review process, and undermine key provisions of the Affordable Care Act."
Chairman Neal emphasized that, “by rushing to finalize these regulations, the previous Administration did not allow sufficient time for stakeholder consultation. Accordingly, I urge you to act immediately to delay the effective dates of such midnight regulations so that the incoming Administration can identify the best course of action to amend or rescind these regulations as needed to prevent harmful policies from going into effect."
