SPRINGFIELD, MA-House Ways and Means Chairman Richard E. Neal (D-MA) released the following statement in response to the announcement that the United States and Mexico had agreed upon a remediation plan following the United States Trade Representative’s (USTR) self-initiated labor complaint filed under the United States-Mexico-Canada-Agreement (USMCA) Rapid Response Mechanism:
“We fought hard during USMCA negotiations to include proactive, aggressive enforcement tools. Ambassador Tai knows these tools and how important enforcing the USMCA is to its overall success, and the success of our three nations.
“USTR’s action advances the first self-initiated petition under the Rapid Response Mechanism, and is a critical step in protecting the labor rights of workers in Mexico and the United States. It also sends a clear message that violations of the agreement will be taken seriously and will not go unaddressed. I commend these efforts and will continue to support rigorous enforcement of the USMCA."
