Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro N. Mayorkas acknowledged the far-reaching effects law enforcement officers have on society in his message about National Police Week.
In a May 12 Department of Homeland Security news release, Mayorkas said Homeland Security has a worldwide reach.
“Our law enforcement work spans the globe and protects our country in every domain: on land, in the air, on the seas and in cyberspace,” he said in the release.
Mayorkas said National Police Week provides an opportunity for law enforcement personnel from the world over to “gather in Washington, D.C., to honor law enforcement officers who lost their lives in the line of duty, making the ultimate sacrifice in the service of our communities and our country.”
The Department planned an array of ceremonies to allow law enforcement officers to remember their fallen colleagues and also recognize the noble career choice they all pursue.
"Many of you perform this work on the front lines, at great risk to your personal safety, every single day,” Mayorkas said in the release. “Others of you contribute to the law enforcement mission in different, important ways. Together, you perform the noble work of dedicating your talent and selves to the protection of others.”
Police and federal officers are committed to remembering those whose “ultimate sacrifice has made it possible for us to enjoy the freedoms and the life that define this greatest country of ours,” he said in the release.
