Granholm: DOE announces $4 million for U.S.-Israel clean technology proposals 'to fight the global crisis of climate change'

The U.S. Department of Energy recently announced the availability of $4 million in funding for the development of new clean energy technology in collaboration with Israel's Ministry of Energy and the Israel Innovation Authority.

According to a May 16 DOE news release, the objective of the recent request for proposals is to address climate change through improving carbon-free technologies and minimizing the environmental impact of natural gas. The DOE also stated these technology proposals will be funded by the Binational Industrial Research and Development Energy program, which promotes the introduction of renewable energy technologies through U.S.-Israeli partnerships.

“For over 10 years, the BIRD Energy program has demonstrated success in driving clean energy innovation and we are excited to expand upon this progress with a crucial focus on using technology to fight the global crisis of climate change,” U.S. Secretary of Energy Jennifer M. Granholm said in the release. “The BIRD program is proof positive that the more we share resources and ideas with allies around the world, the closer we get to the clean energy solutions needed to reach net-zero carbon emissions by 2050.”

Currently, the program offers conditional awards of up to $1 million from $4 million in available funds, according to the release. The deadlines for executive summaries and final proposals are June 30 and Aug. 16, respectively. Selections will be announced in November 2022.
