May 20: bills handled by Education and Labor Committee

The Education and Labor Committee handled H.R.7860 bill on May 20, according to the US Congress.

Bill H.R.7860 titled “To prohibit the Secretary of Labor from constraining the range or type of investments that may be offered to participants and beneficiaries of individual retirement accounts who exercise control over the assets in such accounts” was referred to the House Committee on Education and Labor by the House of Representatives. The bill is sponsored by Rep. Byron Donalds with Warren Davidson, Tom Emmer, Young Kim, David Schweikert as cosponsors.

The Education and Labor Committee moves forward in some way on two bills per day.

Most bills have a hearing where those involved explain why they are for or against the bill. Roughly 8,000 bills are addressed by committees each year but only about 800 make it to the floor of Congress, according to ushistory.org.

A 2019 report from the Brookings Institute argued committees aren’t capable of delving fully into the issues they address and are forced to rely on lobbyists.
