An additional $100 million in additional U.S. military assistance is being authorized to help Ukraine fight against Russia's continued war.
U.S. Secretary of State Antony J. Blinken announced the funding in a May 19 news release.
"Pursuant to a delegation from the president, I am authorizing our 10th draw down of additional arms and equipment for Ukraine’s defense from U.S. Department of Defense inventories, valued at up to $100 million," Blinken said in the release. "This brings total U.S. military assistance to Ukraine to approximately $3.9 billion in arms and equipment since Russia launched its brutal and unprovoked full-scale invasion of Ukraine Feb. 24."
The supplies are to be sourced from the U.S Department of Defense's inventories, which has brought total U.S military assistance to about $3.9 billion since Russia's initial invasion in February, according to the release.
Additionally, Congress also approved an additional $40 billion in economic and military aid for Ukraine, according to a May 19 Associated Press news article. The aid package was approved via an 86-11 vote. Reportedly, the 11 "nay" votes were all from Republicans.
The AP article noted $24 billion of the aid package would go toward weapons, equipment and military financing, as well as restoring Pentagon stocks of arms and paying American troops deployed in nearby countries. The rest of the aid package will help keep Ukraine's government functioning and assist other countries around the globe which rely on Ukraine's crop yields.
Additional funds will go to "help Ukrainian refugees in the U.S., seize Russian oligarchs' assets, reopen the U.S. embassy in Kyiv and prosecute Russian war crimes," according to the AP article.
