Chairman Berman endorses Treasury Department’s designation of Iranian groups and individuals

The following press release was published by the House Committee on Foreign Affairs on June 16, 2010. It is reproduced in full below.

Washington, DC - Congressman Howard L. Berman, chairman of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, today issued the following statement supporting Secretary Timothy Geithner’s designation of Iranian entities and individuals.

“I strongly support today’s action by the Treasury Department to designate dozens of Iranian entities and individuals as contributors to the proliferation of weapons of mass destruction. These designations will significantly extend the reach of comprehensive Iran sanctions legislation that Congress will soon pass, reinforcing and augmenting the international sanctions regime so that we can achieve our goal of persuading Iran to suspend its uranium enrichment program, in accordance with the demands of the international community.

“I commend Secretary Geithner and the Treasury Department for moving rapidly to build on UN Security Council Resolution (UNSCR) 1929. These designations strengthen our anti-proliferation efforts in several sectors, as urged by that resolution, including the financial, transportation, and energy sectors and Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corp (IRGC). They also underscore the importance of the Obama Administration’s remarkable diplomatic achievement in winning UN Security Council support for UNSCR 1929."
