Engel Statement on Appointment of General Flynn

The following press release was published by the House Committee on Foreign Affairs on Nov. 18, 2016. It is reproduced in full below.

WASHINGTON-Representative Eliot L. Engel, Ranking Member of the House Committee on Foreign Affairs, today made the following statement on the reported selection by the President-Elect of retired General Michael Flynn as the next National Security Advisor.

“General Flynn deserves our thanks for his service, as do all men and women who serve our country in uniform. However, I have questions about his appointment as National Security Advisor. General Flynn has frequently engaged in hateful anti-Muslim rhetoric; appeared regularly on Russia's state-owned, anti-American propaganda TV network; and received sensitive intelligence briefings while lobbying on behalf of foreign governments.

“The President deserves advisors who have an even-keeled approach to foreign policy and a clear record of upholding our values at home and around the world. General Flynn does not appear meet those standards.".
