Engel Statement on Guatemalan President's Expulsion of CICIG Commissioner

The following press release was published by the House Committee on Foreign Affairs on Aug. 27, 2017. It is reproduced in full below.

WASHINGTON-Representative Eliot L. Engel, Ranking Member of the House Committee on Foreign Affairs, today made the following statement on Guatemalan President Jimmy Morales's expulsion of U.N. International Commission against Impunity (CICIG) head Ivan Velasquez.

“I am extremely disappointed by President Morales's decision to expel CICIG Commissioner Ivan Velasquez from Guatemala. Under Commissioner Velasquez's leadership, CICIG has played a transformational role in combating corruption and impunity in Guatemala.

“President Morales has acted and now the United States Congress and the State Department must examine the future of our foreign assistance to the Guatemalan government and the extent to which the Morales Administration is meeting the conditions set out in our annual spending bills.".
