Engel Statement on Deaths of UN Peacekeepers in the DRC

The following press release was published by the House Committee on Foreign Affairs on Dec. 8, 2017. It is reproduced in full below.

WASHINGTON-Representative Eliot L. Engel, Ranking Member of the House Committee on Foreign Affairs, today made the following statement.

“I am outraged and deeply saddened by the deaths of at least 14 United Nations (UN) peacekeepers in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) today, the worst massacre of UN troops in recent history. The sacrifices these peacekeepers made to protect populations at risk of armed group violence highlight the critical role they play as the DRC’s political and security crises continue to worsen. That’s why I continue to support fully funding UN peacekeeping operations, and I urge the UN Security Council to not cut the number of UN troops in the DRC.".
