Washington, DC - Representative Gregory W. Meeks, Chairman of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, issued the following statement in response to the assassination of Haitian President Jovenel Moïse.

“I extend my condolences to the family of Haitian President Jovenel Moïse and keep first lady Martine Moïse in my prayers for a speedy recovery. The spiral of violence and political assassinations are a threat to democracy in Haiti. My thoughts go out to the Haitian people as we all hope for a return to peace and stability. I will do everything I can to support a thorough investigation to ensure that those involved are held accountable.

“The next few days are critical for Haiti. In these difficult times, I call on all parties to remain calm and maintain respect for the rule of law. I urge the Haitian government to do everything it can to ensure a peaceful transition of power.

“Finally, I call on the international community to come together and show solidarity and respect for the Haitian people. Today’s tragic and heartbreaking event reminds us that we owe Haiti - one of the first independent countries in our region - our focus and support as it navigates a way forward."
