Washington, DC - Today, Representatives Gregory W. Meeks, Chair of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, Karen Bass, Chair of the Africa, Global Health, and Global Human Rights subcommittee, Tom Malinowski and Sara Jacobs issued the following statement regarding Mali’s scheduled elections and transition to a civilian-led government in early 2022.
“We are deeply concerned by statements indicating a possible delay to the agreed February 2022 timeline for presidential and legislative elections in Mali. We call upon the Malian transitional government to respect the agreed 18-month transition period.
“The ECOWAS Commission established a monitoring mechanism and roadmap for restoring constitutional order and civilian rule in Mali. The United States and other members of the international community support these efforts and remain committed to ensuring Mali has the support it needs to meet these benchmarks. Congress strongly encourages Mali’s transitional government to abide by its commitment to create a single, independent, and democratic electoral body and to restore the trust of the people of Mali."
