DOE announces nearly $25M funding to access clean hydrogen electricity generation: 'public-private partnerships are paving the way'

The US Department of Energy (DOE) on May 19 announced $24.9 million in funding for research and development projects that will support improving clean hydrogen for electricity generation.

The DOE will collaborate with private companies in six projects that include researching advanced technology solutions that have the potential to make hydrogen more available and effective as fuel, according to a press release by the DOE.

“The public-private partnerships announced today are paving the way for more domestic clean hydrogen production and use to support the President’s plans to combat climate change, accelerate clean energy use, and create good-paying clean energy jobs for Americans,” U.S. Secretary of Energy Jennifer M. Granholm said, according to the release.

The projects include the improvement of carbon dioxide (CO2) capture “associated with hydrogen production from carbon-based resources and technologies to more efficiently use hydrogen in gas turbines for electricity generation,” the release adds.

The six projects seek to expedite the development of technologies that will improve the performance, reliability, and flexibility of current and new hydrogen technologies, the release states. The electricity that will be generated from clean hydrogen assists in reaching President Biden’s goal of having a zero-carbon American power sector by 2035.

“Across the Department, we’re working to make clean energy sources — like hydrogen — more affordable and accessible to help decarbonize America’s electrical grid and directly combat climate change,” Granholm said, according to the release.

According to the release, the National Energy Technology Laboratory under the Office of Fossil Energy and Carbon Management will manage selected projects.

According to the release, the DOE’s National Energy Technology Laboratory (NETL) under the Office of Fossil Energy and Carbon Management (FECM) will manage the following projects: 8 Rivers Capital, LLC (Durham, NC); Gas Technology Institute (Des Plaines, IL); General Electric Company (Greenville, SC); General Electric, GE Research (Niskayuna, NY); Raytheon Technologies Research Center (East Hartford, CT); and the Raytheon Technologies Research Center (East Hartford, CT).
