Second US-UK Strategic Energy Dialogue: 'Cooperation with friends is crucial'

The US-UK Strategic Energy Dialogue met for the second time on May 19.

The meeting was meant to discuss energy security and resilience, clean energy, net=zero goals and leadership objectives in multilateral energy forums, according to a press release by the Department of Energy.

“The United States and the United Kingdom have formed strong bonds over our shared efforts to meet strategic challenges and global risks,” US Secretary of Energy Jennifer M. Granholm said, according to the release. “Russia’s invasion of Ukraine has created new challenges for energy security, affordability, and resilience. And while these challenges have demanded immediate action to calm energy markets, they have ultimately underscored the imperative for our clean energy transition. Today’s conversation has made clear that we are committed to pressing forward with an urgency on our sustained plans for a clean energy transition.”

According to the release, Granholm and Secretary of State Kwasi Kwarteng agreed on addressing today’s energy needs of today and the need for sustained leadership and a joint effort to support global energy market stability and reliability.

“The UK and US are determined to utilize the strength of our unique relationship through the Energy Dialogue to help European countries end their reliance on Russian oil and gas, and to strengthen collaboration on new nuclear power and clean energy technologies," UK Business and Energy Secretary Kwasi Kwarteng said, according to the release.

Kwarteng said they discussed the role companies in the US and UK will play in investing in the economies and how to ensure supply chain and critical mineral security, according to the release.

“Cooperation with friends is crucial if we are to ensure secure, affordable and sustainable energy,” Kwarteng said, according to the release. “We are determined to partner with like-minded allies to curb Russia’s influence on global gas and oil markets as the West races to become more energy self-sufficient by generating more clean, home-grown power for our people.”
