Chairman Carper Statement on President’s Intent to Nominate Jeh Johnson to be Secretary of the Department of Homeland Security

The following press release was published by the U.S. Senate Committee on Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs on Oct. 17, 2013. It is reproduced in full below.

WASHINGTON - Today, U.S. Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee Chairman Tom Carper (D-Del.) released the following statement on President Obama’s intent to nominate Jeh Johnson to be the next Secretary of the Department of Homeland Security:

“The President’s intent to nominate Jeh Johnson as Secretary of the Department of Homeland Security is welcome news. This nomination comes at a critical time for the agency and its mission because, for the past several months, the Department has been operating without a Senate-confirmed Secretary or Deputy Secretary, and also has numerous other high-level vacancies. Mr. Johnson brings a wealth of experience from the Department of Defense, and I am eager to meet with him and discuss his vision for the Department of Homeland Security. I look forward to working with my colleagues on the Committee to consider his nomination in a thorough and timely manner."
